A long time later.....Water memories...In conversation with Elias Canetti

My greatest wish is to see a mouse devour a cat alive.
But first she has to play
                                                         with it long enough.

You lofty words, you gaze to the sun, you kiss from star to stars,
you vain storms, you swaggering, hopping lightning-birds will sing tenderly
when people have completely wiped one another out.
And birds will yearn for us,
and the mocking birds among them will preserve
our conversations for a long time.

Whenever you observe an animal closely,
you feel as if a human being sitting inside were making fun of you.

We have no standard any more for anything,
ever since human life is no longer the standard.

Since they started sitting on chairs and eating at tables,

they have been waging longer wars.

Wars are fought for their own sake.

Experiencing and judging are
as distinct as breathing and biting.

"Nothing is past....."

Memory is good because it increases the measure of the knowable.

Making sure never to exclude the dreadful

Memory may grasp it otherwise than as it appeared in
its terrible presence, otherwise but no less cruel,
no more endurable, no less absurd, cutting, bitter,
and not content because it is past,

nothing is ever past.

The actual value of memory lies in this insight that nothing is past.
